Sleep Disorders Center Opens at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial
9/18/2007

Florida Hospital Fish Memorial has opened a new state-of-the-art Sleep Disorders Center.  With almost 1,300 square feet of space and four private sleeping rooms, the new Sleep Disorders Center promotes an ideal testing environment for sleep disorders.

“It is estimated that two out of five Americans have a serious sleep disorder. For these individuals loss of sleep compromises everything they do,” says Medical Director for the Sleep Disorders Center Hendrik Dinkla, M.D., Neurologist, Board Certified by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Sleep studies can diagnose some common sleep disorders including:

  • Sleep apnea - Periods of not breathing during sleep.
  • Insomnia - Fragmented and disrupted sleep.
  • Narcolepsy - Sudden and uncontrollable attacks of excessive sleepiness during the day.
  • Parasomnia - Sleep-walking, nightmares and night terrors.

Dinkla continues, “People with sleep apnea have double the risk of hypertension and triple the risk of coronary heart disease. Studies have shown that they are seven times as likely to have a driving accident when compared to a non-sleep deprived, healthy individual. The good news is that sleep disorders can be treated. The first step in reclaiming restful, rejuvenating sleep is comprehensive testing and diagnosis in a center that specializes in sleep disorders.”

“We are pleased that this facility is able to accommodate the increasing demand for sleep studies,” indicates Florida Hospital Fish Memorial President Joe Johnson. “As a result of coming here for help, our patients and their families will be getting restful nights of sleep.”

Sleep disorders are medical problems and therefore testing and treatment are covered by most private insurance carriers and Medicare. Self-referrals are accepted at the Sleep Disorders Center.
